The Superior National Forest and Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness lie to the South. We offer complete outfitting service to the canoeist backed up with expertise and the experience of many years in the outfitting business. Your needs, when you arrive here, have been well considered. Sleeping accommodations, meals, head start launch service, and many of the smaller items you may need for your canoe trip are available here at the end of the trail.

Camp each evening on the lake of your choice and cook over an open fire. Fresh caught fish are delicious on the trail. Sleep will come easy snug in your sleeping bag inside a waterproof tent with the lapping of waves and whisper of the wind rustling tall pines. Young and old may enjoy the canoe country.

Personalized Trip Planning As the party leader, you will determine the tone and nature of the trip. Prior to looking over the maps, we will talk about the general focus (fishing, scenery, photography, etc.), the number of experienced canoeists in your group and the amount of traveling you have in mind. The importance of this service cannot be overemphasized. We will listen closely to what you tell us, because, among the many to choose from, there is likely one route best suited for your party. Once your route is established, we mark it on waterproof maps with special attention given to campsites, waterfalls and fishing holes along the way. We then demonstrate the pitching of our tents and take a look at your other equipment and food supply. Our routing encompasses everything necessary in the way of advice and instruction...your party is special to us at SUPERIOR-NORTH.

Our Location... SUPERIOR-NORTH is located at the northernmost point on the Gunflint Trail, 57 miles northwest of Grand Marais on Saganaga Lake. Our base location provides DIRECT access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA), Quetico Provincial Park and Northern Light Lake wilderness areas. Our BWCA starting points also include; Seagull, Round, Ham, Magnetic and Poplar lakes.

Our menu has a varied selection for a balanced diet. Dinners are top quality supplied by the leading manufacturers for freeze-dried foods. CANOES - We use the lightest canoes manufactured. We-No-Nah Kevlar, Alumacraft, Grumman and Old Town, complete with portage yoke, featherweight T-grip paddles and Stearns Life Vests.

FOOD - Richmoor and Dri-Lite freeze-dried foods guarantee the excellent quality we strive for in our 'food pack'. Your menu is also supplied with many fresh food items as possible. All of us at SUPERIOR-NORTH know how important FOOD is on a canoe trip. We continue to trail-test foods from different companies to ensure that you have the very best food available for a well balanced diet. FOOD PACK - Our specially designed, lightweight, aluminum food pack with portage straps will keep your food from crushing, keep small 'critters' from chewing their way into your food supply and it doubles as a 'chef's table'. NYLON PACKS - Duluth Packs have been the choice of seasoned canoeists for many years. Designed with adjustable straps and waterproof lining, these packs are lined again by SUPERIOR-NORTH with a waterproof, plastic bag. SLEEPING BAGS - Our bags are manufactured to our specifications by the Slumberjack Company. Our freshly laundered bags are made of rip-stop nylon and contain 3 lbs. of Hollofil II, providing you with lightweight sleeping comfort. FOAM PADS - Therm-A-Rest Inflatable - Again specially designed...they are just what we wanted...light, tough and easy to roll. KITCHEN-FLY - A large tarp that acts like a kitchen and dining roof on a rainy day. COOKING EQUIPMENT - Mirro-Aluminum nesting cook kits are sent out with you clean and shiny. RAIN GEAR - We've tested several brands of rain ponchos and ours are tough enough to stand the rigors of portages and pack straps, yet compact and light.

Fishing the Superior-Quetico Travel by canoe enables you to reach some of the best fishing to be found anywhere. Smallmouth bass action on the border waters cannot be topped. Walleyes are found in nearly all the lakes in good sizes and quantities. Saganaga Lake yielded the state record 17 1/2 lb. walleye in 1979. Lake trout are native in many of the lakes averaging 2 to 5 lbs. Northern pike are found in all the lakes. You never know when a 20 pounder will devour your lure. Base Camp This type of trip is ideal for families with small children and parties who do not wish to make more than one or two portages. We will help you select a base camp location where you can set up camp for an extended stay, exploring and fishing the waters of your choice by day, and returning to camp each evening. A boat and motor may be rented for base camping if you prefer. Lashing two canoes together like a catamaran while traveling the lakes provides an alternative for extra stability. Overnight Accommodations and Meals We have private rooms in our 'bunkhouse' style base quarters with comfortable beds and sleeping bags. Modern toilet and shower facilities. Your car is safe in our lighted parking area -- no extra charge. Free use of canoes the night before your trip. Meals are available at reasonable rates nearby. Your first morning at the base a hot and hearty breakfast in our coffee shop is included in your outfitting package. Trading Post Sag Lake Store is operated in conjunction with Superior-North Canoe Outfitters. We have a complete line of fishing tackle and lures used in this area. Live bait is on hand.
